The screenplay was written by (and loosely based on the true life story of) Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani, (who portrays himself) and his wife Emily V. Gordon

The film follows Kumail working as a comedian, living in Chicago, and trying to make it in the industry while driving for Uber in his spare time. His family is a traditional Muslim family. They regularly set him up with various Pakistani women in hopes of continuing the tradition of an arranged marriage, much to his annoyance. During one of his shows, he is heckled by a woman in the audience.

After the show they begin to date and comedian Kumail and graduate student Emily fall in love, but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings in this feature length comedy film from director Michael Showalter.
